In 2006 I made a great decision; I decided that, somehow, I was going to find a way to spend pretty much full time in two campaigns where Democrats were challenging Republican congressional incumbents, both in Connecticut. Now those two candidates, Chris Murphy and Joe Courtney, are outstanding freshmen members of Congress. On a personal level, I learned a great deal about what it feels like to be totally emotionally invested in campaigns of people you care about and admire.
I recently made a similar decision, to spend as much time as I can, helping Chris Dodd become President. Once again, I'm getting that feeling of investment and pride being in the Dodd campaign.
Sometimes things are so obvious that we miss them, especially in politics and campaigns.
Chris Dodd not only has the most experience relevant to being President. He has the most meaningful experience. He is a passionate advocate but also a seasoned negotiator. Unlike so many politicians, especially on the national stage, he looks skeptically on over-the-top tributes to him, unless they focus on his actual myriad of accomplishments that made a difference in peoples' lives.
When the two of went to Congress together, in that class of "Watergate Babies" in 1974, I knew he was destined to become a national leader. Now the American people have a chance to help him fulfill his full potential.
Congressman, Connecticut's 6th Congressional District 1974-1983
