WASHINGTON - On the same day he unveiled his comprehensive plan for affordable, universal health care, Senator and Presidential Candidate Chris Dodd committed to working with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to develop and implement policies that provide all Americans with access to quality, affordable health care and lifetime financial security by signing a pledge presented by Divided We Fail, a partnership formed by the AARP, the Business Roundtable and Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
"Americans deserve better than being forced to choose between providing for their families and receiving the medical care they need, however more and more Americans are forced to make these choices every day," said Dodd. "Affordable health care and financial security are basic needs. That is why I have developed a plan to provide universal, affordable health care for all. However, America cannot wait for the next President to solve our health care crisis; we must have bold leadership to address this issue now. That is why I have joined with the AARP, the Business Roundtable and SEIU's organization, Divided We Fail, to address these critical priorities."
Dodd unveiled his health care plan today in Marion, Iowa at the kitchen table of Jerry Vuichard. Dodd's plan would provide affordable, universal coverage for all Americans within four years by establishing the Universal HealthMart - a health care insurance market place based on the Federal Employees Health Benefits Plan. Under Dodd's plan all employers would have to provide insurance to their employees either through the Universal HealthMart or through existing systems, and individuals would be automatically enrolled in the Universal HealthMart. Individuals and businesses would contribute to HealthMart based on their ability to pay, and individuals would have a choice of plans and coverage.
By pooling coverage, Dodd's plan would spread risk and increase the bargaining power of the government to negotiate lower premiums. Premiums would be made further affordable by requiring insurance companies to provide incentives that promote the use of technology and preventive care as a condition of participation in the Universal HealthMart.
Dodd will continue to make his case for universal, affordable health care coverage in Iowa through Saturday, July 28th.
