YouChoose 08 Spotlight: Change the Debate

Matt Browner-Hamlin's picture
This week is Senator Dodd's YouTube Spotlight. You can read the transcript of this video here. In the video, Senator Dodd's Spotlight video departs from the tactic other campaigns have used ("Hi, my names is.... I'm running for president because...Please tell me...Thanks for coming out.") and seeks to raise the level of debate. Dodd diagnoses the superficial coverage that the media has provided thus far in the race. America is facing many profound issues, particularly how our presence in the middle of Iraq's civil war is hindering our national security. But instead of having a serious discussion about the great challenges facing the country the traditional media has focused on $400 haircuts and the travails of Paris Hilton. In the video, Senator Dodd says:
"They say they talk about haircuts instead of troop cuts, song choices instead of energy choices, Paris instead of Baghdad, because they say that's what you want to talk about. "
But we have the power to bypass bypass the traditional media filter by participating in discussions online, through blogs and YouTube, ensuring that the important issues – like how to responsibly end the war -- get the real attention that they deserve in the 2008 presidential campaign. The Dodd Amendment to the Defense Authorization bill is the best way to responsibly end our involvement in the civil war in Iraq. It will be under discussion in early July. Senator Dodd is asking YouTube viewers to call on their Senators and voice support of the Dodd Amendment -- and video tape themselves having this important interaction. YouTube users can then upload their conversation as a response to Senator Dodd's YouTube Spotlight and we'll highlight them on chrisdodd.com. You can find all the information to contact both of your Senators here: http://chrisdodd.com/youtube. While the media focuses on trivial aspects of this race, Senator Dodd is talking about real, bold solutions for the challenging problems we face today. Using YouTube to whip votes for legislation that would actually end the war in Iraq is a bold new step that no one else has tried. Please join Senator Dodd alongside one of the largest microphones on the internet to effect real, meaningful change in America. Post your interactions with your Senators on YouTube and let's come together to change the debate and end the Iraq War.

I'm going to look at the Dodd candidacy seriously. We need a new way forward in America, and new leadership to set the pace.

We need to stop looking at people like Paris Hilton, or whoever the latest media darling is, as PROBLEMS. They're not problems, they're potential message outlets. We need to start asking [paying] whoever is in the spotlight to plug our issues/candidates/party. How different would it have been for Paris to emerge from Jail with a new perspective of the impact of Race on the Prison Problem, and to plug a progressive issue? Or for Larry Birkhead to mention out loud how insane the Bush tax cut for the estate tax was, and he should know, he just inherited an estate. You get the point...don't battle the person in the spotlight, co-opt them and feed them your talking points! Product placement for the modern era of the politically disengaged american public.
